The leader of the project, Professor Satu Miettinen (DA), has research interests around the themes of women’s empowerment (Miettinen, 2007a, 2006), the role of women in the interface of art and science (Miettinen, 2004), design methods in engaging with the Arctic region (Miettinen 2014, Miettinen et. al., 2012), service design methods for inclusion and the participatory development of services (Miettinen and Valtonen 2012, Miettinen 2011, Miettinen and Koivisto, 2011), as well as socially responsible art and design methods (Miettinen, 2007b). Satu has vast experience in leading and managing research projects and both her research and artistic work is strongly associated with the use of design methods to develop services. Currently Satu is a coordinator for the Horizon 2020 funded research program ‘Participatory Tools for Human Development with the Youth’ (PARTY), a research project that investigates the marginalisation of young San people while focusing on the improvement of their different situations. Satu will participate in the production of socially responsible and empowering art work as she is interested in developing new ways to work with and engage communities while she engaged artistically and socially with youth and women in various global locations. She is an artist focusing on mixed media approaches such as the combination of textile art and photography. Her portfolio includes group and solo exhibitions.
